The Operator Mindset
Why a solo operator with AI now does the work of a developer, marketer, SDR, analyst and ops team — and how to think like one from day one.
≈ 60 min, build included
Reading about AI changes nothing. Automating one real task you actually did this week proves the idea to yourself with numbers you can point to. This timed win becomes the first piece of evidence in your final submission.
- Choose ONE task you did manually in the last 7 days and will do again. Good candidates: replying to a common type of email, turning notes into a summary, planning a schedule, writing a report outline, comparing options before a purchase.
- Before you touch AI, write down the baseline: how long did it take last time, in minutes? Make an honest estimate. This is your "before" number.
- Start a timer. Write a prompt with the task, your context, constraints and the exact output you want (use the prompt below).
- Run it in ChatGPT or Claude. Read the result critically and give one round of feedback: say what to change, not just "better".
- Edit the final output yourself until you would be comfortable sending or using it. A human pass is part of the workflow, not a failure of it.
- Stop the timer. Write the "after" number, including your editing time. Subtract to get time saved. If AI was slower this time, record that honestly and note why.
- Save the winning prompt in your notes under the heading "Win 1". Add a screenshot or the before and after text with any private details removed.
Prompt · First-win promptAct as an experienced [ROLE, e.g. executive assistant / study coach / project coordinator]. Task: [DESCRIBE THE TASK IN ONE SENTENCE, e.g. "Turn my rough meeting notes into a clear summary with action items"]. Context: [WHO YOU ARE, WHO THE OUTPUT IS FOR, ANYTHING THEY ALREADY KNOW]. Source material: [PASTE YOUR NOTES / EMAIL / DATA. Remove names, account numbers and anything private first.] Constraints: - Tone: [e.g. friendly and professional] - Length: [e.g. under 200 words] - Do not invent facts. If something is missing, list it under "Questions for me". Output format: [e.g. a short paragraph, then a bulleted list of action items with owners and dates].
Template · Win logWIN 1 Task: [what you automated] Before: [minutes it took manually] After: [minutes with AI, including your edit] Time saved: [before minus after] Tool used: [ChatGPT / Claude / other] Prompt that worked: [paste] What I changed by hand: [list] Would I repeat this? [yes/no and why]
Done when: A "Win 1" entry exists with a before time, an after time, the final prompt, and the finished output (privacy details removed).Common mistake: Picking a task that is too big or too sensitive. Choose something small you can finish in an hour, and never paste passwords, financial account numbers, or other people's private data into a chat tool.
Prompt Engineering That Compounds
Stop typing one-off prompts. Build reusable, parameterized prompt assets that get better every time you use them.
